20 ways to use sticky notes in the classroom!

Inside: A quick list of 20 different ways sticky notes can be used in the classroom by both teachers and students that I have found to be helpful & engaging! If you have any questions while reading use the chat feature or send me a DM on Instagram @maestraehlert :)

1. Exit slips

2. Data tracking/grouping students

3. Graphing (thank you for your comment on my last Instagram post @juliethefish_designs)

4. Check-list for students on their desks - helps hold them accountable & helps keep them concentrated on the task at hand

5. Students use a sticky note to annotate while they are reading

6. Feedback to students on their work

7. Self-monitoring for students - Each student receives 3 sticky notes during class. If they have no sticky note on their desk they don't need any assistance, 1 sticky note on their desk if they have a quick question, 2 sticky notes on their desk if they need some help understanding, 3 sticky notes on their desk if they are completely lost. You get to spend the class time with those that need your help! If students are embarrassed by other students seeing their sticky notes, you could have them place a folder on their desk.

8. Goal setting - Have students create goals at the beginning of each unit or study! Collect them. Once the unit or study is over, pass the sticky notes back out to the students. Have the students reflect on their goal. What went well? What didn't go so well?

9. Brainstorming

10. Timelines for novel studies/movies/TV shows

11. Class polls

12. Messages to students - Is there something you need to let a student know, but it is not something you want other students to hear? Sticky notes can be be the perfect messengers!

13. Labels - "To grade" "To file"

14. Scavenger hunts

15. Do you have a teacher mailbox? I have a little box that I set on my desk with a pile of sticky notes next to it. If there is ever anything more private that a student wants to tell me or ask me, they can use the mailbox & the sticky notes provided there to do that

16. Peer edit - When students are reviewing their fellow classmates' work they can use sticky notes to write their feedback on. When finished, give those sticky notes to their partner

17. Seating charts

18. Music - Listening to a song in class? Students can write down their thoughts/feelings on the sticky note. When done listening, every student must find 3 other people to share their sticky note with

19. Positive notes from student to student

20. Sticky note concept map/web

I hope you found a new idea or something that you can use in your classroom! I always love hearing from you. If you did find something useful - please let me know or tag me on Instagram @maestraehlert

Always,
